| Clashes Srinagar, over 12 injured | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 13: At least 12 persons including five security personnel were injured when clashes broke out between police and protesters, demanding action against security personnel involved in the killing of a youth last week, after Friday prayers in the Jamia Masjid area in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Police fired dozens of teargas shells and used batons to disperse the protesters who took to streets chanting pro-freedom slogans and pelted stones and petrol bombs on police and paramilitary forces at Nowhatta chowk. The clashes, which erupted at Nowhatta and adjoining localities including Shampora, Gojwara and Rajourikadal, continued till evening, disrupting normal life in the area, official sources said. The perotesters were demanding punishment to the security personnel involved in the killing of a youth during a similar protest demonstration last Friday. Shahid, a resident of Jogilanker locality of Rainawari, was killed and over 30 others including six policemen and a CRPF ersonnel were injured in the clashes last week. Pitched battles between the two sides left five policemen and seven protestors injured, the sources said adding the protestors hurled two petrol bombs on police during the clashes but no one was hurt in the attacks. In view of the clashes, shopkeepers in the area pulled down their shutters. There was heavy rush of traffic as authorities had diverted all traffic through Nowhatta in view of the heavy rush of devotees to the holy Hazratbal shrine on the occasion of first Friday after Eid-e-Milad-un Nabi, birthday of Prophet Mohammad. The clashed forced the authorities to divert the traffic to other routes.
