SOLAN, June 13: Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT) has successfully inaugurated the 4th edition of the National Workshop on Statistical Techniques in Biological, Computational, and Medical Sciences (STBMS-2024). This one-week workshop, running from June 10 to June 15, 2024, aims to enhance collaborative knowledge across these fields using statistical techniques.
Organized by the Centre of Healthcare Technologies and Informatics (CEHTI), along with the Departments of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics and Mathematics, the STBMS workshop has been a biennial event since its inception in 2016. This year's workshop has attracted 37 participants, including undergraduate students, Ph.D. scholars, and faculty members from various regions of India, such as Jammu, Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, and Himachal Pradesh.
The inaugural ceremony, held on June 10, 2024, commenced with the Saraswati Vandana and featured the esteemed presence of Chief Guest and session speaker, Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma. The event was also graced by JUIT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajendra Kumar Sharma, Dean A&R Prof. Ashok Kumar Gupta, and Registrar & Dean of Students Maj. Gen. Rakesh Bassi (Retd.). Workshop Convener Prof. Tiratha Raj Singh, along with Coordinators Dr. Neel Kanth and Dr. Ragini Raj Singh, welcomed the participants and highlighted the workshop's objectives and activities, which include lectures and hands-on sessions.
Prof. Rakesh Kumar Bajaj, Head of the Department of Mathematics, and Prof. Sudhir Syal, Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, also addressed the participants. Prof. Tiratha Raj Singh provided insights into the progressive knowledge covered in the workshop over the past decade.
The first two days of the workshop focused on the foundational aspects of statistics, advancing to higher-level data analysis techniques. Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma delivered talks on the basics of statistics, the importance of statistics in biosciences, correlation and regression, parametric and non-parametric tests, and hands-on sessions using SPSS. Prof. Tiratha Raj Singh discussed the application of bioinformatics in biomedical and healthcare fields.
The subsequent three days of the workshop will cover machine learning and deep learning techniques, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and factor analysis. The workshop will conclude on Saturday, June 15, 2024.
