Early Times Report

Kathua, Mar15- Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Mian Altaf Ahmed on Sunday called upon Gujjar and Bakarwal community to project actual feedback to the Government for effective redressal of their problems. The Minister was addressing a Conference of Gujjars and Bakarwals at Lakhanpur here today.

The Minister advised the participants to involve themselves in identifying the problems and ensure their projection at the proper forum. He called upon them not to depend entirely on the community leaders as most of the time the actual problems of the community remain unaddressed due to lack of proper feedback. He said many times, a few people take the lion’s share while majority of the community are denied the benefits coming from the government.
Referring to various welfare schemes, Altaf said that government spends crores of Rupees for the welfare of the downtrodden section like ST and SC communities, but the benefits do not reach to the deserving persons. He urged them to avail the benefits of flagship schemes like National Rural Employment Guarantee schemes (NREGA) to improve their living conditions. He also called for adopting modern techniques to earn maximum dividends from their traditional occupations.
Responding to the demands raised by the people, the Minister said that people of each Gujjar Basti should involve themselves in listing down their problems and highlighting them at proper forums.
Earlier, the speakers raised several problems confronting them which include problem of permanent settlement of nomad Gujjar and Bakarwal families, lack of adequate health and Education facilities around their bastis, non- inclusion of poor families of the community in BPL category and denial of ownership rights for the land under their occupation.
