| Dilawar warns action against exploiters of growers during peak fruit season | | | Srinagar September 21st : In a bid to arrest the unjustified hike in freight for carriage of fruit, the Government today fixed Rs 38/- per box 16 kgss pack as freight charges from the valley to New Delhi. The rate shall be applicable upto ending October 2006 and will be reviewed then. Announcing this decision at a joint meeting of the representative of Private Transports Companies and Fruit Growers Associations of various districts here this after- noon , the Minister for Horticulture, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir made it clear that government would not tolerate any exploitation of the fruit season by any transport company and would come down with heavy hands to curb attempts to exploit the growers by creating artificial scarcity during peak season. The Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production Department, S.S. Sahni, Commissioner/Secretary Transport, Mr. D. K. Nargotra, Secretary Agriculture, Mr. K. B. Jandial, DIG (Traffic) Mr. M. Amin Shah, Director, Horticulture (P&M), Mr. Showket Ahmad Zaragar, RTO Kashmir, and representative various Fruit Growers Associations and Private Transport companies were present in the meeting The Minster directed the Police and Law Enforcing agencies to identified touts which have crept into the system of transportation of fruit and deal with them sternly. Eulogizing the important rule of fruit growers and Private Transport Companies for their contribution in the state economy, Mr. Dilawar Mir urged them to work in harmony and ensure that nobody creates any impediments in the smooth movement of fruits from various markets of the valley to different destinations in the country. He said growers and transporters are two wheels of the economy of the state and both of them should safe guard each others interests. The decisions to fix Rs 38/- per box was announced after two hour long exchange of free and frank views between representatives of the fruit growers Associations and Private Transporters. The decision was accepted with thunderous applause from both sides. Going back to early 80’s when he as a Minister for Agriculture had scribed the duty slip system for allotment of trucks by the government, the Minister said that he as a democrat does not believe in putting restrictions on free trade of transport but at the same time he will expect transport industry to respond positively in such situations. He said, he is confident that government would receive unflinching cooperation from the transporters and no body will give any reason to the Government to consider re-imposing the duty slip system to facilitate shifting of fruit from the valley to various terminal market of the country for better returns. Ensuring transporter of every possible support of the government in-mitigating their problems, the Minister said that government will take up with the Chief Minster of Punjab for preventing harassment to the transporters of the state while crossing different check posts in Punjab. Similarly, matter will be taken up with the Chairman of Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee, New Delhi for redressal of grievance of fruit Mandies in various fruit Mandies of the country. |
