KATHUA, June 27: The Drug De-Addiction / Phychological Counselling Cell of Govt. Degree College for Women, Kathua on the occassion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which comes every year on 26th June launched signature campaign against "Use of Drugs and Tobacco" aimed at making India a tobacco and drug-free nation among children. The event was organised under the able guidance of Dr. Savi Behl esteemed Principal of the college. She said this day was established by the United Nations in 1987, this day serves as a global reminder of the urgent need to combat the pervasive issues of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. is very important with respect to global perspective. She emphasized on organizing such events on regular basis.
During the opening remarks, Dr Renu Gupta, Convener of Drug De- addiction/ Psychological cell said that this day plays a key role in raising awareness among people about The theme of World Drug Day 2024 which is "The evidence is clear: invest in prevention" The theme of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2024 teaches us the importance of understanding that effective drug policies need to be grounded on science, research, compassion, and full respect for human rights. The day also emphasizes a thorough comprehension of the social, economic, and health consequences of drug use.
Dr. Ajay Sanotra, member of the Drug De-Addiction /Phychological Counselling Cell highlighted the significance of World Drug Day 2024 which lies in its ability to raise awareness about the severe consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. These issues not only destroy lives but also disrupt communities, fuel crime, and weaken economies. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), around 269 million people worldwide used drugs in 2018, and the numbers have continued to rise. The anti-drug day highlights the global commitment needed to address these challenges through education, support, and rehabilitation.
Moreover, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking underscores the necessity of international cooperation. Drug trafficking is a transnational issue that requires a coordinated response from governments, organizations, and individuals.
The whole event was supervised by Dr Renu Gupta, Convener of Drug De- addiction/ Psychological cell. Dr. Rachna Devi, Dr. Surekha Rani, Dr. Syed Nasir Ali Shah were present during the event and played a vital role in making a event successful. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Surekha Rani, member of the Drug De- addiction/ Psychological cell.
