SKUAST organizes interactive programme on Women in Science

JAMMU, June 29: Under the able guidance of Honourable Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu, a programme focussing on Women in Science, "Interactive Meet on Inspiring budding females on scientific careers." was organized at Main Campus, SKUAST-J, Chatha on 28th June, 2024 under NAHEP-IDP. Dr. Anuradha Agrawal, Principal Scientist and National Co-ordinator NAHEP, ICAR-New Delhi, Dr. Chamma Awasthi, Scientist-D, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi and Dr. Hema Tripathi, Associate Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu were eminent speakers of the session. The programme started with the lamp lightening by the dignitaries, followed by warm welcome and introduction of the event by Dr. Hema Tripathi, who was the coordinator of the event. Dr. B. N. Tripathi, Honourable VC SKUAST J, stressed upon the need of women empowerment and gender equality for sustainable development. He remarked that the role of women is very tough in society as she has to be very careful in handling family and professional life. He emphasized on sharing of duties between women and men. Dr. Anuradha Agrawal delivered her talk on Modern Trends of Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and had an elaborative interactive session with female faculty and students of SKUAST-J. She expressed her views on the importance of women in STEM and ways to encourage young girls to pursue STEM education. She also discussed about the challenges faced and ways to create an inclusive and supportive environment for women in STEM workforce. Dr. Hema Tripathi talked about women in agriculture education. She briefed about the revolution of women in agriculture education since post Independence. She also highlighted the paradigm shift in quality of agriculture education in last 7 years and apprised about increase in enrolment of women in higher education in India including agricultural sciences. Dr Chamma Awasthi enlightened the audience about various career opportunities for women in STEM. She also discussed about different ongoing women related national and international schemes funded by DST, India. The interactive session also included panel discussion on Career Growth Opportunities and Capacity Building of Women in Science. Anju Shalla; Dr Sahar Masood, Head, Division of Fisheries; Dr Shalini Suri, Professor, Division of Veterinary anatomy; Dr. Moni Gupta, Head, Department of Biochemistry, SKUAST-J were panellists of the session. The session was moderated by Dr. Puja Rattan, Associate Professor cum Senior Scientist. Dr. Vikas Sharma, PI and Coordinator NAHEP was also present in the event. The event was attended by more than 250 girl students and 50 female faculty members. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. Puja Rattan, organizing secretary of the event, while Sweeta Manhas and Mridul Sharma conducted the proceedings of the programme.
