| Varun Sahni throws open workshop on bioinformatics | | |

Jammu, Mar 16- The Bioinformatics Centre, School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu and School of Biotechnology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra jointly organized a 4- day Workshop on ‘Trends in bioinformatics’ which was inaugurated by Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu. Eminent scientists and academicians from the University, IIIM, Jammu, SKUAST, Jammu and SMVDU were also present on the occasion. The workshop is being attended by Scientists and Teachers from various Colleges and Institutions.
Prof. Sahni deliberated on three major issues regarding Bioinformatics. He highlighted the importance of Bioinformatics in understanding the code of life. Further he stressed that during the last few years tremendous developments have taken place in the field of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and other related areas. Although on one side there is need to start vocational courses, we should also stress on bringing back the thrill of doing research and discovering the unknown, he said. Prof. Sahni welcomed the idea of holding the workshop in collaboration with SMVDU as he stressed that no big achievements can be made in isolation.
Earlier, Prof. Manoj Dhar, Director, School of Biotechnology welcomed the guests to the inaugural function. He dwelt upon the emergence of a new field of research namely Bioinformatics as a result of inputs from Computer Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics and other disciplines in Biology. He brought forth the urgent need to train manpower in this area.
Prof. B. P. S. Sehgal, Dean Academic Affairs, suggested that the urgent need to start courses in Bioinformatics in the University. Prof. Subash Gupta, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, highlighted the importance of upcoming areas in life sciences such as Biotechnology, Human Genetics and Bioinformatics. Prof. V. Verma, Dean School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, threw light on the nature of the workshop to be conducted. The eminent speaker Prof. D.K. Gupta, Head Bioinformatics Department, Allahabad University, delivered lecture on recent trends in Bioinformatics.
Mohit Sharma conducted the third session in which the participants were trained in several soft wares and web based tools in Bioinformatics. The function concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Jyoti Vakhlu.
