| Panthers ask CM to convene roundtable | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar16- While the APHC leadership will discuss whether to accept Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's offer for holding talks with the separatists, the Panthers Party is in favour of taking leaders of all mainstream political parties into confidence when the dialogue was initiated. Leader of the Panthers Party in the Assembly, Harsh Dev Singh, today wanted the Chief Minister to convene a roundtable conference of leaders of all mainstream political groups and the separatists so that the discussions were broad based. He said that whenever talks were held with the separatists they should be held with sincerity. However, a senior APHC leader, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, said that the Chief Minister's offer for talks will be discussed by the members of the executive committee. He said "I cannot comment on it because it calls for a collective decision.” At the same time he made it clear that "it is too early to say whether the Chief Minister had plans of discussing the Kashmir issue or any other matter." He said the APHC is in favour of resolving problems through sustained dialogue. He said for the resolution of the Kashmir issue talks have to be held between India and Pakistan but representatives of people of Kashmir need to be involved in these parleys. Harsh Dev favoured talks with the separatists for the purpose of promoting peace. He said the state has witnessed lot of death and destruction during the last 20 years. People, he added, have become wary of the turmoil and in the interest of peace and progress it was necessary for the Chief Minister to convene a roundtable conference of leaders of all political parties, including the separatists, where the issue of peace could be discussed threadbare. He hoped that Omar Abdullah played his role in getting the 5th working Group on centre-state relations, constituted by the Prime Minister, to submit its recommendations. The Panther Party leader said that the report of the 5th Working Group could prove a decisive factor in not only promoting peace but also contributes to end regional and sub regional imbalances. Harsh Dev said that the ideas of greater autonomy and self-rule were being raked up by the National Conference and the PDP. The report of the 5th Working Group could remove mist of suspicion having developed over these two ideas.
