Kathua woman makes bid on life, names SPOs as abettors

Jammu, March 16: Alleging harassment by two Special Police Officers (SPOs) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, a 20-year-old woman attempted self-immolation at Lohai Malhaar village in Kathua district.
The victim, identified as Shahnaz Akhtar, daughter of Mohammad Akhtar, a divorcee, suffered 90 per cent burns. Before felling unconscious, she accused two SPOs of intimidating her for the last few months to make her marry one of them.
Shahnaz has been admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu, and her condition is stated to be critical.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, Garib Dass, said, "A case has been registered in this regard and an inquiry has been initiated against both the SPOs, who are also posted at Malhaar police station. Action under law will be taken against the accused if found guilty."
Both the SPOs have been identified by the victim as Gul Mohammad and Mohammad Latif.
