Disaster preparedness reviewed in udhampur

UDHAMPUR, MARCH 17 -To discuss emergent situations due to frequent accidents taking place on National Highway (NHIA), the Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ajay Khajuria today convened a special meeting of District Disaster Management Committee to ensure prompt rescue, medicare and relief measures by the agencies concerned.
SSP Udhampur, Mr. Surinder Gupta, Chief Planning Officer, Chief Medical Officer, ARTO and officers Traffic Police, Fire Services, Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Tehsildars attended the meeting.
Threadbare discussions were held with regard to the role of BRTF, Health Department, District Police, Traffic Police, Police Wireless, Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Fire Services, Civil Defense and BSNL in prevention of accident besides joint mechanism for rescue, relief and medicare in the event of accidents.
Dwelling on the road improvement measures on NHIA, it was decided in the meeting that the BRTF would construct Crash Barriers at vulnerable points from Kud to Tikri, Centerline marking, raising of reflective sign boards indicating speed limits, sharp turns, accident spots and no overtaking zones etc.
Likewise, District Police was asked to station Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) at National Highway Emergency Stations like Samroli, Chenani, Kud, Udhampur and Tikri Police Stations which could function round the clock in the event of occurrence of accident at a shortest possible notice. It was also decided to station a Crane permanently at Samroli besides deploying two police vehicles for regular patrolling.
Similarly, the Health Department would keep ready quick response medical ready for providing medicare at PHC Tikri, Chenani, Allopathic Dispensary, Kud besides District Hospital, Udhampur to provide timely treatment and minimizing loss of lives besides rushing to the site of accidents quickly for giving first-aid to injured in an ambulance.
The Traffic Police was asked to launch a drive to install devices for checking speed of vehicles, overloading, booking drivers for over-speeding, wrong overtaking, negligent besides launching a special checking drive against those who drive vehicles during evening hours in drunken condition. The ARTO would ensure fitness checking of vehicles besides rationalizing routes and conducting survey to reduce incidents of overloading.
The Civil Defense Organization was directed to keep ready rescue volunteers besides equipments required for rescue operations like ropes, rope gloves, helmets, confined space stretchers, head lamps, search lights and other accessories. The BSNL authorities were asked to set up STD phone facilities after every one-KM distance on NHIA with special focus on vulnerable points with a list of emergency phone Nos.
