| Concern: Valley temperature six degrees above normal | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 17 : Above normal minimum and maximum temperatures in the Kashmir Valley has been a cause of concern as snow on the higher reaches had started melting, while people in Kargil and Drass continued to shiver with minimum temperature dipping to minus 10 and minus 14 degrees Celsius this morning. Official sources said above normal temperature during this period of the season has resulted in early melting of snow on the upper reaches. The maximum temperature was about six degrees above normal, while the minimum was one degree above normal this morning, which was a great cause of concern. Early melting of snow on the upper reaches, which had received below average snowfall this winter, means water shortage during the summer, they said. Sources said unfortunate part of the Kashmir valley was that all the water go to Pakistan- occupied Kashmir (POK) through north Kashmir and Kargil. Under the Indus-Water treaty we cannot store water of any of our river, they said, adding besides drinking and irrigation water shortage, the valley will witness drop in the local power generation during summer as all the power projects are operating on run of the river. However, rainfall during the summer months is the only hope for adequate water supply for irrigation and drinking, they said. The maximum temperature in city was 19.6, six degrees above normal while the minimum was 5 degrees this morning, one degree above normal. Pahalgam, the base camp of holy Amarnath cave in south Kashmir was coldest with 1.5 degrees minimum temperature followed by Qazigund 2.8 degrees, Kokernag 4.4 degrees and Kupwara 5.1 degrees. Minimum temperature at Leh was 1 degree, near normal. However, people at Kargil and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia continued to shiver. At Kargil the minimum temperature this morning was recorded minus ten, while it was minus 14 degrees at Drass. A weather office spokesman said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places in the state, during the next 24 hours. He said there would be no large change in the temperature during the next 48 hours.
