Emergency blatant attack on democratic fabric of our nation: Purnima
7/16/2024 11:15:48 PM

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 16: Advocate Purnima Sharma, Spokesperson BJP, Jammu and Kashmir, and former Deputy Mayor Jammu, has expressed strong support for the government’s decision to observe “Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas” (Constitutional Murder Day) on June 25 annually. This day marks the anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency by the Congress government in 1975, a dark chapter in Indian history when democratic rights and civil liberties were trampled upon.
In a statement issued here today, the senior BJP leader said, “The decision to observe ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ is a significant step towards ensuring that the younger generations are aware of the grave injustice done to our democracy during the Emergency. It is a reminder of how the Congress party undermined the very essence of our Constitution, violating fundamental rights and silencing voices of dissent.” During the Emergency, which lasted for 21 months, thousands of political leaders, activists, and journalists were arrested without trial, press freedom was curtailed, and civil liberties were suspended. She emphasized that it is essential to remember and reflect on these events to safeguard democracy and prevent such an assault on constitutional values from happening again. “The Emergency was a blatant attack on the democratic fabric of our nation, and the Congress party is solely responsible for this dark period in Indian history. Their authoritarian rule and disregard for democratic norms caused immense suffering and set a dangerous precedent,” she asserted. “Observing ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will serve as a stern reminder of the consequences of unchecked power and the importance of upholding democratic principles.”
The senior BJP leader criticized the Congress party for its continued attempts to rewrite history and downplay the severity of the Emergency. “It is shameful that the Congress party, instead of apologizing for its actions, often tries to justify the Emergency. This shows their lack of respect for democratic values and the Indian Constitution,” she said.
