Jammu, July 16: Vanmahotsava, the festival of tree planting was celebrated by the Division of Silviculture & Agroforestry, Faculty of Horticulture & Forestry, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) in collaboration with Department of Forest Ecology and Environment JKUT at Main Campus, Chatha on 16 th of July, 2024. The plantation drive was initiated by Dr. B.N. Tripathi, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu, the Chief Guest of the occasion, by planting a Sapling of Red chandan (Pterocarpus santalinus), accompanied by Dr. M. K. Kumar (IFS), CCF, East Circle, Jammu who was the Guest of Honour in the occasion and planted Rudraksh (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) sapling.
The chief guest while addressing the gathering, highlighted the importance of tree plantation programmes, as they are one of the best ways to mitigate the climate change and reduce Global warming.
He emphasised to follow the campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” to honour the mother, & Mother Earth by planting at least one tree and taking care of it till it becomes mature.
Dr. M. K. Kumar, the guest of honour, in his speech stressed upon simple living to reduce the carbon footprint. He further drew attention on indoor and outdoor pollution and how it is leading to environmental degradation. Officers of the Forest department, Faculty members, Non-teaching staff, and students took part in tree plantation.
The event was coordinated by Dr Sandeep Sehgal, Professor and Head, Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry, SKUAST-Jammu and Ashwani Kumar, DFO, Urban Forestry under the guidance of Dr. Vikas Tandon, Dean Faculty of Horticulture and Forestry. Dr. S. K. Gupta, Director Research, Dr. Rajinder Peshin, Director Education, Dr. Amrish Vaid, Director Extension, Dr. Sanjay Khar, Director Planning and Monitoring, Dr. Anil Kumar,
Registrar, SKUAST- Jammu, teaching and non-teaching staff, PG students, Scholars and Heads of the Division attended the event.
