Shreya wins first international individual fencing medal for J&K UT

JAMMU, July 17: A prominent ace fencer of J&K UT, Shreya Gupta of Jammu and Kashmir has set the ball rolling in Fencing by winning first ever Individual medal at International level by clinching sabre category bronze medal in the ongoing Commonwealth championship 2024 at Christchurch, New Zealand. Shreya in a superb display of game, completely outclassed Saunders Nicole of England in table of 16 by margin of 15-3, whereas in medal bout, she secured win over Hardge Gala of Australia in tight finish by 15-13. In semifinals, shreya was defeated by Juliet Mind of Singapore by score of 15-11.Pertinent to add here that Shreya Gupta has already won 2 bronze medals in team event of commonwealth cadet and junior fencing championship held at Newcastle and London in 2018 and 2022 editions of championships. Besides, she had secured junior bronze medal in team event at Asian championship at Uzbekistan and has participated in about 15 prestigious international fencing events. She is holding the title of both Senior and Junior National Champion and till date has won 17 Gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze medals at National level. She had been elite athlete of Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of Ministry of youth& Sports, GOI and a Khelo India athlete.
Shreya Gupta has been a regular trainee of Sports Council Fencing centre at MA Stadium, Jammu and coached by Sh. Shotu Lal Sharma of sports council and Sh. Ujwal Gupta in the beginning of her fencing career. Sh. Shotu lal sharma was all praise for shreya for giving her stupendous efforts at national level and international level.At present she is getting training at Vijay Bharat Sports Academy, Ahmadabad, Gujarat. Former international player and referee Sh. Rashid Ahmed choudhary has extended his greetings to Shreya gupta for making fencing fraternity proud.
Meanwhile, President, J&K Amateur Fencing Association, Mrs Nisha Sharma, Secretary Bhanu Vijay Sharma has congratulated Shreya Gupta on behalf of association and hoped that she will keep on Indian flag high in coming years also.
Secretary, J&K Sports council Mrs. Nuzhut Gul has expressed her congratulations and good wishes to Shreya gupta and said that she has been continuously bringing laurels to India especially JK UT for many years. She further said
J&K Sports council shall be always there to boost the morale and supporting young hard working talented players who are helping to bring Jammu and Kashmir on the sport map of the country.
