Earlier in his address of Dr.M L Dogra , chairman, BLSKS highlighted the story of God Shiva is often referred as "Neelakanta", Neel means blue and kanta means throat. This tells us that Shiva has blue throat, so He has the title of Neelakanta. The story behind Neelakanta title is :: When Devas and Asuras did Samudra Manthan, churning of the Ocean for celestial nectar, foremost poison oozed out of the Ocean. No one except Shiva had the power to drink the poison and still survive.Shiva drank the entire poison and His throat became blue in colour because of the poison effect. Shiva din't swallow the poison, since the entire Universe resides in Him. And His consort Parvathi resides in His throat and thus doesn't allow the poison to travel down Shiva's body.
