Water scarcity sparks protest in Mirgund | Traffic comes to halt at Sgr-Baramulla Highway, demonstrators disperse after assurance from officials | | Early Times Report
Mirgund (Pattan), July 23: Scores of people blocked the Srinagar-Baramulla National highway at Mirgund Pattan in North Kashmir on Tuesday to protest against the scarcity of drinking water. The traffic on the highway came to a standstill due to the blockade. “We have been facing immense hardships due to shortage of drinking water. Our pleas to redress the water shortage have fallen flat,” protesters told Early Times. Protesters, including men and women, said: “If the Jal Shakti Department cannot provide us with the drinking water through water pipes they can send tankers to our areas.” As the protesters refused to relent, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pattan and other officials reached the spot. They pacified the protesters and assured them that the concerned department will redress their genuine grievances. After assurances protesters called off the dharna and allowed the traffic to ply on the National Highway. |
