Women want more of them in politics
3/18/2009 11:55:54 PM

SALMAN NIZAMI
Jammu, March 18: Women have always been made to play a second fiddle in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir but the times are about to change. Though there are only three women out of the 87 elected legislators in state assembly but that does not mean that those outside the system are less conscious about politics.
As state slowly enters into the Lok Sabha election fever, the women folk are making their priorities listed and voices felt.
“Women in this part of the globe have been least attracted towards the electoral politics. This is because of the fact that women were always regarded as less competitive or capable of representing the mass in a conservative society like ours”, says Radika Sharma a sociology student in Jammu University.
We need more women in politics and it is essential to train potential leaders as well as encourage the ones who are successful at the local governance level to enter the state assemblies and Parliament” said Savitri Devi member Centre for Social Research (CSR) an NGO that is encouraging women to join mainstream politics. “Our organization addresses issues like the need for enhancing the capacity of the women to fight elections and sensitizing state and national parties’ leadership to field more women in the elections. Many of women in state of Jammu and Kashmir already have some political background. Despite that they are not able to carve a niche for themselves because of existing male dominance in Indian Politics, Savitri Devi said.
Speaking to Early Times Asma Jeelani, a journalism student, said elections are not a solution to the Kashmir issue, Kashmir issue needs a political solution and that has to come through dialogue as per the wishes of all the parties to the dispute- India Pakistan and the Kashmiris, says Asma. When asked about the choosing of a Parliament representative Parul Kour, a student said honest and dedicated candidate will be preferred and many issues related to women will be in my mind. When I cast my vote are increase of employment schemes and development of Jammu.
Price rise is always on issue and Amarnath agitation is no more on issue for a house wife but, employment of our children, security of our family and development of our area are the issues on priority for us in the general elections. But we also prefer the party or candidate, who will raise the voice of Jammu in the parliament said Sanjana a housewife from Trikuta Nagar Jammu.
I prefer a candidate with clean image in addition to the manifesto of his party when I go to cast my vote unemployment is always a big issue in each and every elections. So also keep the party manifesto in mind said Shifali software engineer in a Private company.
Even if some political parties have cashed voted on the name of Amarnath land row agitation, issue of corruption or price issue in the recently concluded Assembly election in J&K, these issues will not play any role in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, on the priorities of Jammuties would be different in the Lok Sabha election.
