JAMMU, MARCH 19 -To educate the soil testing laboratory staff and field functionaries, the Agriculture Chemistry Section of Agriculture Department organized a two-day training programme under National Project on Management of Soil Health and Fertility (Macro Management) at Krishi Bhawan, Talab Tilloo, here this afternoon. On the occasion, Director, Agriculture Department, Jammu, Vinod Bala who was the chief guest inaugurated the training programme. Addressing the officers, Mrs. Bala said that soil testing is a tool used to help make informed decisions about the management of soil nutrients-whether for a garden, lawn, field or forest. She said that soil tests provided information on fertilizer needs, helping to save money and time. Soil tests can also help to protect the environment from contaminated runoff or groundwater pollution caused by over fertilization. She said that soil tests should be taken in the spring or fall for established sites and at any time of the year for new seeding and plantings. She said that soil test is must in two to three years usually adequate to monitor nutrient levels. She said that soil would be tested for pH, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, organic matter and cation exchange capacity.
