| Panthers activists demonstrate outside EC office | | | Early Times Report
New Delhi, Mar 20- Hundreds of Panthers Party workers led by Sanjoy Sachdev, President, Delhi Pradesh National Panthers Party today demonstrated in front of Election Commission Office here demanding end of corrupt practices in Jammu and Kashmir. A representation by Prof. Bhim Singh, Chairman of NPP was also submitted to the Election Commission Office. Bhim Singh in his representation has drawn the attention of the Election Commission towards the situation that has arisen because of flagrant violation of the ‘Model Code of Conduct’ in J&K by the State government that amounted to corrupt practice, damaging the credibility of Election Commission. Bhim alleged that the State government has directed the police to start police recruitment drive after the election schedule was announced by the Election Commission. The police IG’s have been conducting so-called interviews and the boys so selected have been assigned the job to campaign for the Congress candidates in Jammu and Udhampur constituencies, a precondition for their final appointment. The Election Commission cannot sit silent on such matters, he said. Referring to the Government decision to nominate eight persons to the Legislative Council, Prof Singh has urged the Election Commission to stall the process as otherwise it shall amount to corrupt practices and violation of the ‘Model Code of Conduct’. He said that provisions of Section 123(8) (3) of the Representation of the Peoples Act prohibit such appointments or nominations as they can be done by the publication in the official Gazette. If such appointments or nominations are allowed to take place, would raise a number of questions on ‘free and fair’ elections and on the credibility and integrity of the Election Commission, Prof Singh in his communication said. He has requested the EC to intervene in the matter so that no such nominations are made to the Council, besides stopping recruitments and transfers till the elections are over.
