| Free for all: Shoot out at JU VC’s Sectt | | Admn block ransacked, outsiders have field day | | Munish Gupta/ Sumit Sharma
Jammu, March 20: In a situation changing fast towards free for all, the Jammu University campus was today rocked by a shooting incident in which a security guard sustained injuries. What came as more shocking was the fact that shooting incident took place well inside the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat and right outside his chamber. The University officials appeared at words as the shooter was an outsider who used to spend most of his time at the Campus. Panic gripped Jammu University campus when a youth opened fire at another which missing the intended target hit a security guard injuring him in the leg. Sources said that at time of shooting incident only 32 out of 150 JU security guards were present at the campus but none of them could catch hold of the shooter who ran away without even being chased. It all happened when two groups of students were protesting inside the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat on two different issues while Vice Chancellor Varun Sahni was chairing a meeting inside his campus. Eye witnesses said that a group of students were protesting against a teacher identified as Sushil Sharma who was accused of molestation by a BA Part II student of the Directorate of Distance Education. The Vice Chancellor was chairing a meeting on the same issue in his chamber when the incident took place even though later the girl refused to substantiate the charges. Student leader Varinder Chib told Early Times that the girl, a resident of Domana, was later influenced by some University authorities to run away. In the meanwhile another group of students arrived at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat and started protesting against some irregularities and difficulties at the fee collection center of the University. Some youth in both groups had an old enmity and this led to scuffle between them. According to eye witnesses the accused identified as Amandeep Singh son of ex MLC Deepender Kour, Bageshwer Khajuriya, law student in JU, Anudhan Singh alias Kiki, owner of Jehlum school Barnai and Vinay Sharma entered into VC Chamber with sharp edged weapons and revolver and in the ensuing protest Amandeep Singh targeted at Varinder Singh Chib alias ‘Bomb’ who was also standing in the protest but the bullet missed the target and hit security man’s leg identified as Sahil Kumar. The accused after the incident escaped from the spot. When the incident occurred there was an enquiry going on in the VC chamber against Sushil Sharma, coordinator of DDE who allegedly molested BA Part II girl student and besides VC some other professors were also present in the chamber. The accused after the incident rushed towards entrance where they on revolver’s tip asked the security men to open the gate where they intercepted a motorcyclist identified as Vijay Kumar son of Ram Lal resident of Muthi, lab assistant in Physics department, and snatched his Passas ion Plus motorcycle bearing registration number JK02AA,6809 and rushed towards Panama Chowk side. There were thirty security men deputed on the spot when the incident occurred but all of them in order to safe their lives laid on the ground making the way to the accused to rush away from the spot. Soon after the incident protestors broke all the window panes in the premises in order to show their resentment. Pertinent to mention here there were one hundred and twenty security men deployed in Jammu University campus to protect the students and teacher community as well but the incident is a slap on the JU’s security. When contacted to police officers they said that JU has its own security men and police interference is not allowed here and the incident reveals how much students are safe from teachers and how much JU is safe from outsiders as well. The reason behind the fire at Bomb is stated to be the old enmity between two groups. Where as when contacted to JU officers they prefer to remain mum. Police has registered a case under section 307RPC,Arms Act in Gandhi Nagar police station and the raid in the house of accused Vinay Kumar resident of Peer Mitha is on in late night till last reports came in. Where as treatment of injured is on in GMC hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger. Meanwhile, the entire University fraternity Comprising Jammu University Teachers Association, Officer Forum, Non Teaching Employees Association and Non Gazetted Employees Association strongly condemned the heinous act of firing by some anti-social and criminal elements and also damaged the University property worth lacs of rupees. All the associations of Jammu University unanimously resolved and request the authorities to weed out such criminal elements from the Campus. Further the authorities mush immediately initiate strict legal action against such elements so that the high academic standards of the University are not vitiated and the students coming from different parts feel secure. In this regard the University fraternity has resolved to observe token protest on Monday 23rd March, 2009 from 10:00 am to 12 :00 noon. The University of Jammu authorities have constituted a Committee to enquire into the circumstances leading to the incident of firing which took place outside the Office Chambers of the Vice-Chancellor in which two University Employees were injured. The four member committee comprising of Prof. Naresh Padha, Prof. of Phsysics as Convenor, Prof. D.S. Bhau, Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Kulwant Singh, Prof. of Law and Asstt.
