Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 10: In a significant move to promote environmental awareness and sustainability, the NSS Unit "Veerangana" of Government College for Women, Bhagwati Nagar, in collaboration with the Rotary Club Jammu, organized a plantation drive on the college campus and at the adopted school, Government Boys Higher Secondary School Gole Gujral. The event was part of the "Ek Paed Maa Ke Naam" initiative and the Swachhta Pakhwada, under the guidance of Dr. Meeru Abrol, Principal of the College.
The primary goal of the drive was to raise awareness among students about the importance of plantation and how it can help address major environmental issues like global warming, soil erosion, and pollution. Trees play a crucial role as natural filters by absorbing harmful gases and releasing oxygen, thereby creating a healthier and more conducive learning environment.
The drive commenced with the planting of saplings at the adopted school and on the college campus. The event saw enthusiastic participation from various dignitaries, including Balvinder Singh, President of Rotary Club, Anamika, Secretary, Dr. Ranjeet Jamwal, Retired Principal of Government SPMR College of Commerce Jammu, Ramnik Singh, Vikas, along with students, faculty members, and other volunteers. In total, around 50 saplings were planted.
During the event, students adopted saplings and pledged to nurture them, committing to a sustainable and better environment. Dr. Meeru Abrol emphasized the importance of such initiatives, highlighting that plantation drives not only purify the air but also conserve water, help in climate control, preserve soil, and contribute to the overall well-being of the environment.
Dr. Abrol also praised the NSS Wing volunteers for their sincere efforts and hard work. She encouraged students by stating that while the act of planting a tree may seem small, it has far-reaching impacts on preserving our planet and maintaining ecological balance.
The event was successfully organized by Dr. Preeti Salathia, NSS Program Officer, Dr. Pavanjeet Bali, and Dr. Kamaldeep Singh. Faculty members Prof. Nisha Bhagat, Prof. Gagan Jyoti, and Dr. Mosmi Raina also played significant roles in contributing to the success of the drive.
The plantation drive stands as a testament to the college's commitment to environmental stewardship and education, inspiring students and faculty alike to take proactive steps in preserving the planet for future generations.
