After Mehbooba’s refusal PDP left without CM candidate
Says powerful state reduced into municipality, will never contest Assembly polls

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 11: As former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has ruled out contesting Assembly elections in the present political set-up, uncertainty looms large over the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (PDP) chief ministerial candidate in the coming polls.
Mehbooba Mufti has repeatedly declared that she would not contest the Assembly election after the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has bifurcated into two Union Territories and “special status” has been snatched. Highly placed sources said that the PDP is unlikely to declare its chief ministerial candidate and the party would contest elections without declaring its chief ministerial face. “Instead of announcing the chief ministerial face, the party would prefer to contest the Assembly election on credentials of candidates”, sources said.
On Sunday Mehbooba Mufti declared that she will never contest assembly elections in the present situation where the erstwhile powerful state has been reduced merely to a municipality.
“I will never be thinking about contesting the Assembly elections”, Mehbooba said.
“I had contested elections when the erstwhile state of J&K had its own constitution, own flag, and most powerful legislative assembly in the whole country”, she said, adding, “In the present scenario the J&K has reduced into merely a municipality where the Chief Minister would have to take permission from every small thing from the Lieutenant Governor”, she observed.
On November 6, 2022, Mehbooba Mufti said that participating in the next assembly election was not her priority.
Earlier in December 2021, Mehbooba Mufti had announced that she would not contest elections till Article 370 is restored in Jammu and Kashmir. She added that statehood was not their demand.
