Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 21- The threat of Leela Karna Sharma that in case the BJP did not field him from Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency he would contest as an independent candidate motivated the BJP leadership to deny the party ticket to the RSS supported Chander Mohan Sharma. The BJP leadership had been told that as former Chief of the Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti Leela Karan had the capacity to turn the scales in his favour.
Right from the day the poll schedule was announced the RSS had supported the candidature of Chander Mohan Sharma who had played a key role in ensuring success for Chaman Lal Gupta and Ashok Khajuria from Jammu West and Jammu East in the recent Assembly poll. It was the last minute change of strategy that the BJP dropped Chander Mohan Sharma and gave the party mandate to Leela Karan Sharma. The BJP leadership continues to believe that Leela Karan continues to carry political weight that he had gained while heading the Sangarsh Samiti.
Party sources said that Chander Mohan had been promised that he would be given the BJP mandate for contesting the Lok Sabha seat. Even Shanta Kumar had supported his candidature but the former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister changed his mind when he was told that Leela Karan was planning to contest as an independent candidate if he was not given the BJP mandate. The BJP leaders then explained the development to the RSS leaders who relented.
Party sources said that Nirmal Singh has emerged as a leader with bigger support in the party high command than his critics in the BJP. This is evident after he got the BJP ticket for contesting Udhampur-Kathua Lok Sabha seat .His critics had argued with the party high command that since Nirmal Singh had lost the Assembly election from Gandhi Nagar constituency he should not been given the party ticket. But Nirmal Singh convinced the party bosses that he was number two in the recent Assembly poll and in 2004 Lok Sabha election he had not fared miserably
