Over 100 Chinar Saplings planted at Bhalessa

Jammu Mar 21: In order to boost the ‘SABZAR’ movement lauched by Education Educational, Environmental, social, sports and cultural society Bhalessa, Doda, the society on the eve of World Arbour Day 2009 carried a volunteer plantation in sub division Gandoh. About 100 Cinar saplings were planted in various public places and in the premises of governmental institutions. Besides this volunteer of the society under the supervision of Jamait Ali Agha and Haji Ghulam Nabi president of the society carried the plantation at various public places and schools. About one hundred (100) Chinar and 200 hundred other non fruit plants were planted during the day.
Speaking on the occasion Mohd. Ayoub Zargar, Chairman of the society said that there is great need for the conservation of natural resources and celeberation of Arbour day means to strengthen the Eco-friendly relation at global level.
Early formulation of state Environment Policy and providing teeth to the pollution control board by strong legislation has been demanded by Indian Council for Enviro-Legal Action(ICELA)J&K Chapter, convenor Ashok Sharma addressing the Eco-Activists on the occasuion of World ARBOR DAY at Panjtirthi, Sharma addressed concern over the alarming increase of Air, Water, Soil and Noise pollution and degradation of green cover in J&K state.
He urged upon the people an social voluntary organisatins to contribute there bit in massive plantation programmes launched by social forestry and the connected departments on the one hand and check felling of trees in every nook and corner of the state.
ICELA has been organizing massive plantation programmes, legal action against the tree fellers, polluters, awareness programmes by organizing green marches, seminars, Quiz contests, and publishing Environmental English Monthly Magazine. Sharma said and added since 1989 there is serious need to further strengthen the coordination between the different government departments, NGO’s, Environmental Activists and lovers of nature to create more and more awareness and a strong movement to protest forests, wild life, water bodies, soil erosion and arrest noise, traffic and industrial pollution for such coordination purposes constitution of an apex body with statutory authority is required in furtherance of the cause of environmental protection.
S.N. Sharma provincial president of ICELA in his addressed stressed upon the need to provide at least 10% budgetary allocations for forest sector. So that the available green cover is protected and massive plantation programmes are taken up.
J.D. Singh, Naresh Sharma, Dr. B.R. Bawa, Dr. Bharat Bushan, Susheel Sharma, J.P. Singh and Kailash Nath addressed the gathering.
In connection with 34th World Arbor Day, the Social Forestry Department (SFD) has started a massive plantation drive in the State. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, J&K, Irshad Ahmad Khan while planting a Deodar tree in the premises of SKIMS Medical College Bemina started this special plantation drive. In this behalf, an impressive function was organized by the Social Forestry department in collaboration with Natural Society for the protection of water resources, wetlands and forests.

Among others, Chief Wildlife Warden, Mr. A.K. Srivastav, Director, Social Forestry, Mr. Shamim Mohammad Khan, Principal, SKIMS, Bemina, Dr. Ghulam Jeelani Qadri, a good number of students, officers from Social Forestry and Forest department and representatives of NGOs were present on the occasion.
Speaking the gathering on the occasion, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests said that if we have to attain self sufficiency in respect of food grains and maintain the ecological balance, all of us have to protect and preserve the forests and restore the degraded forests besides plant more and more trees. He appealed the people to plant at least one tree on the Arbor Day.
