Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 16: Efforts of the veteran politician Tariq Hameed Karra yielded results as the Congress high command on Friday evening removed Vikar Rasool Wani from the post of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief.
Former Finance Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir Tariq Hameed Karra has been appointed as the new JKPCC chief.
Hours after Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the schedule for the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress high command sprang a surprise by removing Vikar Rasool Wani as JKPCC chief.
According to an order issued by K C Venugopal, general secretary organization, “Congress President has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Jammu & Kashmir PCC as follows, with immediate effect Tariq Hameed Karra as PCC president and Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla as working presidents.
“Congress President has also appointed Vikar Rasool Wani as Special Invitee, Congress Working Committee, with immediate effect”, the order reads, adding, “Tariq Hameed Karra has been relieved from his current position as a permanent invitee, Congress Working Committee”,
The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing PCC President, Vikar Rasool Wani.
Important to mention here that the Early Times in its
August 8 edition reported that Tariq Hameed Karra camped in Jammu for two days and interacted with his loyalists in the party.
Karra met with the leaders who are against the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Vikar Rasool Wani.
Highly placed sources said that with the support of some senior Congress leaders, Karra has intensified the efforts to muster support for ousting Vikar Rasool Wani's campaign.
Sources said that anti-Vikar Rasool Wani has stepped campaign to expose the alleged embezzlement of funds during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Anti-Vikar lobby in the party was trying to corner the Pradesh Congress Committee chief by exposing alleged financial irregularities during the Bharat Jodo Yatra to mount pressure on him (Wani).
Karra’s visit to Jammu was also aimed at strengthening anti-Vikar Rasool group.
As reported earlier, there have been demands from some Congress leaders for the removal of Vikar Rasool Wani from his position as the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief. Some leaders have written to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing Wani of undermining the party in the Union Territory.
The Congress has lost the two parliamentary seats in Jammu to the BJP for three consecutive terms. Now, facing another setback, numerous party leaders are calling for Wani's removal, accusing him of sidelining senior leaders, fostering factionalism, and creating an unprecedented crisis within the party.
Reports indicate that four letters have been sent to the AICC President and the Congress Working Committee. The first letter, dated May 7, criticized Wani for ignoring office bearers and causing significant internal issues. Another letter was addressed to Congress Working Committee member Tariq Karra.
Former MLA Sopore Haji Rashid wrote the third letter on May 30, claiming he was marginalized by Wani during the election campaign. The fourth letter, sent on June 2 by eight general secretaries, three vice presidents, three secretaries, and a district president, further detailed Wani's alleged misconduct.
Vikar Rasool was appointed PCC president in August 2022, succeeding former minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir. A former legislator from Banihal, Wani chose to lead the PCC over joining Ghulam Nabi Azad’s new party.
The J&K Congress is currently divided into two factions: one loyal to Vikar Rasool Wani, and the other comprising senior leaders like Ghulam Ahmed Mir and Tariq Hamid Karra.
