GDC Thannamandi concludes two-week long Plantation Drive

Thannamandi, Aug 17: The Department of Botany in collaboration with NSS and NCC Units, Red Ribbon and Eco Clubs, and Departments of Zoology and Environmental Studies of Government Degree College (GDC) Thannamandi concluded two-week long plantation drive organized under different campaigns to mark 78th Independence Day here on Friday.
During the fortnight, between August 1-16, over 100 plants of different species of medicinal, ornamental, indigenous and forest flora planted in the botanical garden and college campus under the patronage of Dr. Farooq Ahmed, Principal of College.
Dr. Ashaq Malik, Head Department of Botany, Prof. Supriya Gupta, NSS Programme Officer, Dr. Goher Iqbal, Incharge NCC, Dr. Shiraz Ahmed, Head, Department of Zoology & Nodal Officer, Red Ribbon Club and Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Convener, Eco-Club & Head Department of Environmental Sciences of GDC college co-ordinated the plantation drive under different campaigns including Swachhta Pakhwada, Ek Paidh Shaheedun ke naam, Ek Paidh Maa ke naam and One Plant for Nasha Mukht Bharat Abhiyan. While speaking on the concluding day, Dr. Farooq Ahmed, emphasized upon the need of planting more and more plants both within college campus as well as outside through outreach programmes to combat climate change and other environmental crises. He appreciated the co-ordinating departments to celebrate Independence Day and pay tribute to national heroes by conducting extensive plantation drive. He also lauded the role of Sharma Nursery Siot, Rajouri for donating over 60 plants to college for the cause as well as Tehsil Administration - Thannamandi for their collaboration to plant saplings under ek paidh shaheedun ke naam in college campus. A large number of students especially from Biological Sciences, NSS volunteers, NCC cadets and faculty members participated in this drive. Prominent among others were Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Dr. Abdul Haque Naimi, Rakesh Puri, Dr. Asif Lone, Dr. Nazar Ul Islam, Dr. Gulshan Rashid Bhat, Anuj Bali, Dr. Ather Aziz Raina, Prof Rumy Dar, Dr. Nagina Kouser and Prof Rizwana Kouser as well as students Abdul Razak, Mehreen Qureshi, Zohra Khatoon and Mehtab Khan, and local fund employees Rayaz Ahmed, Maqsood Ahmed, Mohd Arif and Ajaz Ahmed.
