| Verma opens 2-day NAAC awareness programme | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, MARCH 23 To contemplate on the challenges and opportunities in improving the quality of teaching through various teaching skills, a two-day National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awareness programme for Pvt. B.Ed colleges was organised at Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. An interactive meet of post NAAC accredited colleges was also organised by Quality Assurance Cell on the occasion. Commissioner/Secretary, Higher and Technical Education Mr. N. K. Verma who was the chief guest, inaugurated the programme while Assistant Advisor NAAC, Banglore, Mr. B. S. Ponmudiraj presided. Director Colleges, Mr. N. D. Wani, Principal GCW, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, Prof. Nalini Kohli, HoD Food Sciences, Prof. Hemla Aggarwal, Chairperson MIER, Dr. Arun Gupta, Principal GCW, M. A. Road, Srinagar, Prof. Zeenat Ara, faculty members, non-teaching staff and students were present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Verma underscored the importance of harnessing intellectual and physical aspects for the well being of an educational institution. He said that focus on basic doctrine of quality enhancement activities would prevent plight of student community to other countries to pursue quality education. He said that NAAC has been entrusted with the mandate of quality assessment, sustenance and enhancement of higher education institutions in the country and in fulfilment of its role, the NAAC also advises the major stakeholders of higher education on issues of imparting quality education. The assessment and accreditation process has resulted in tremendous quality consciousness in institutions and has also created an awareness to deal with the emerging challenges of higher education. Best teacher is one who promotes and kindles life-long learning aptitudes among learners, he added. In his address, B. S. Ponmudiraj said that NAAC works in collaboration with the National Council for teachers’ education to assess and accredit the teacher education units. He said that NAAC has developed a manual to assess to open and distance education units of the country. He said that NAAC is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission of India and the system of higher education in India has expanded rapidly during the last fifty years. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Wani said that the forces of globalisation and liberalisation have eroded the sanctity of the education sector in India. Professional programmes across the board have been influenced by this process in a big way. He said that like the Indian industrial products, professional education programmes in India have now to compete internationally. It is easy to understand why management programmes were the first to be impacted by liberalization and globalisation and why leading business schools in USA, the UK and Australia come to India for selecting promising candidates for their programmes.
