| Govt open to suggestions for better protection, surveillance of forests: Mian Altaf | | | Early Times Report Jammu, March 23 - Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Mian Altaf Ahmed on Monday said that the Government was open to suggestions and measures, including those proved effective in other states of the country, for better protection and surveillance of forest resources. The Minister was addressing officers of Forest and its allied departments at a one day workshop on “Forest Protection Challenges”, here today. Describing the protection of forests and state’s ecology as collective and specific responsibility of the participating officers, Main Altaf said that each official in the hierarchy is accountable for the job they are entrusted with. Mian Altaf said he was not averse to adopting the time tested mechanisms that have proved highly effective elsewhere in the country in checking smuggling of timber and poaching. He said the department would send a team of officials to these states to study the suitability of these measures in J&K. Acknowledging the problems being faced by the department on account of lack of manpower and infrastructure, he said the government is on the job and a major improvement would be witnessed in near future. Later, the Minister released three departmental publications including “Forest Law Compendium”, “Annual Administrative Report” of the department and “Forest Statistics Handbook”. Principal Chief Conservators Mr. Irshad Ahmed Khan, Chief Conservator Kashmir and Jammu and other senior officers of Forest and its allied departments were present on the occasion.
