| Kathua fights well before losing to Jammu in Hockey final | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, March 23: Though it was a daunting task for the young men from Kathua to beat the star studded side of Jammu, yet they refused to surrender and played superb hockey entertaining the selected gathering in the VIP Pavilion, especially after the breather, in the final of State Hockey Championship organised by J&K Hockey Association at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today.
Jammu district clinched the coveted trophy for third time in a row. Prior to Jammu district, J&K Police team has been winning the title. It is pertinent to mention here that Police team is not taking part in the state championship for the last three years.
The result in the final was on expected lines with district Kathua losing in the title clash 1-6. Comprised of mostly the teenagers from tehsil Hiranagar, Kathua side made all out efforts to reduce the margin while taking on the experienced and senior players from Jammu, but their efforts yielded on results.
However, the young goal-keeper, Sunil Sharma, who had a daunting task in hand to control the well build and skilled attackers from Jammu, never gave up in the 70-minute game and foiled a number of sure goal attempts.
At the end of the game, both organizers and the special invitees were all praise for young Kathua side and their coach for playing such a wonderful hockey on the Astroturf after practicing on the grassy fields.
From Kathua, Rajinder Singh scored only goal converting a penalty corner
in the 44th minute. Whereas, Jaswinder Singh (4th, 15th, 54th), Mandeep Singh (21st), Dalwinder Singh (26th) and Sikander Pal Singh (60th) scored for winners Jammu district.
Director General Vigilance Organisation and Secretary State Sports Council, P S Gill was chief guest in the final. He gave away winners and runners-up trophies besides other individual prizes.
A host of other guests from the Hockey Association and J&K State Sports Council as also senior players witnessed the final.
