3/24/2009 10:57:44 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Mar 24: As a part of its social duty, the public broadcaster Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Srinagar has initiated a mass awareness campaign on conservation of Dal Lake in its live phone-in program Hello DD thereby bringing the authorities, officials, concerned agencies, environmental experts, NGOs, Dal dwellers, denizens and other stake holders on a single platform.
In its first episode titled ‘SMC and Dal conservation’, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Khawaja Farooq Renzu delved at length about the role of SMC and steps taken by the Corporation for preservation of Dal Lake while answering the queries of on-line viewers on the issues of dismantling illegal structures in and around Dal lake, ban on polythene, rehabilitation of Dal dwellers, sewerage treatment plants (STP`S) and reviving the lost glory and retrieving the area of the magnificent Dal Lake.
According to a spokesman of the Kendra, Renzu vowed stringent punishment against those who litter polythene in and around Dal Lake and said once the new laws would be brought into force the violators could face legal punishment under SRO 182 which exists already there since last year.
While quoting commissioner SMC, the spokesman said “Khawaja Farooq Renzu referred to the recent ruling of the High Court which has directed SMC to look into the issue of encroachments in and around the Lake in coordination with the LAWDA after which both LAWDA and SMC have submitted a joint affidavit stating that no further illegal structures would be allowed to come up in and around the lake at the same time chalking out the strategy for rehabilitating the dwellers of Lake whose structures have been demolished or would be demolished in future as a part of the Dal conservation campaign.”
On controversial relocation of House Boats, Renzu while referring to the recent ruling of the High Court said “The issue is very delicate and we are exploring all options. Moreover we should not forget that the House Boats are there since the times of Maharaja. Therefore as per the rulings of the High Court we along with LAWDA and tourism have to first see the success of the mini- STP`s provided to the House Boat owners for scientific disposal of wastes and then only we can think of other options.”
Meanwhile, Director DDK Srinagar Dr Rafeeq Masoodi said that DD Kashir will telecast a series of programs as a part of its Dal Conservation campaign where environmental experts, officers from LAWDA, SMC, Tourism department, NGOs, representatives of House Boat owners and all stake holders would be provided an opportunity to share their point of view with the viewers during a live interaction.
