Agencies DEHRADUN, Sept 12: UPES successfully hosted the Himalaya Calling: Global Summit on Challenges and Opportunities in the Himalayan Region, a three-day event held from September 9 to 11, 2024. The summit brought together over 170 global experts, thought leaders, and environmentalists who engaged in vibrant discussions on sustainability, climate action, and the preservation of the Himalayan ecosystem through 18 insightful sessions. The event began with a keynote address on 'Himalayan Environment: A Need for Preservation' by Padma Shri Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Chancellor of TERI and former Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Key speakers, including Padma Shri Dr. Anup Sah and Prof. Dr. Uwe Truyen, highlighted the critical importance of sustainability in the Himalayas. Photography exhibitions held at UPES's Kandoli and Bidholi campuses showcased the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas, raising awareness of the region's environmental challenges. Additionally, a display-cum-sale of over 200 locally-made Himalayan products, from food items to handicrafts, was organized. On September 10, Padma Shri Dr. V.C. Thakur, Former Research Director of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, delivered a keynote on 'Earthquake Hazard in the Himalayan Region and Mitigation for Sustainable Development'. Dr. Jitendra K. Pandey, Founder Director of the Himalayan Institute for Learning and Leadership (HILL) at UPES, emphasized the summit's role in bringing global attention to the Himalayas' ecological significance.
