Five days skill training on vermicomposting concluded at Govt GLDM Degree College Hiranagar

JAMMU, Sept 12: Government G.L.D.M Degree College Hiranagar under the aegis of its Department of Environmental Sciences, IIC and IQAC organized Five Day Skill Training Workshop on Vermicomposting in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kathua, Directorate of Extension Sher-e-kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (J&K). About Fifty Students were given hands on training in Vermicomposting. During the course of training the expert resource persons Dr. Vishal Mahajan, Chief Scientist and Head KVK Kathua and Dr. Anamika Jamwal, Chief Scientist (Plant pathology) KVK Kathua interacted with student learners by means of beautiful, informative, educative and innovative presentations along with practical demonstration of Vermicomposting. A vermibed was established in the college campus by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kathua in which students themselves setup vermibed by adding different layers of Leaf litter, organic material and cowdung and finally the earthworms were introduced into the Vemibed. The resource persons also demonstrated the harvesting of compost. They also taught the students on how to commercialize their compost by selling it after proper packaging. The resource Persons inspired the students to start vermicomposting as an enterprise and assured all possible help to the budding entrepreneurs. Amit from KVK also motivated the students by sharing his personal success story in the field of vermicomposting and Organic farming. Certificates of participation were also distributed among the trainees. Two volunteer students were also nominated by the college who will be provided with vermibed and earthworms along with advance training by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
Principal of the College Dr. Pragya Khanna thanked the resource persons from Krishi Vigyan Kendra for providing this life time opportunity to students as a great career training in vermicomposting and organic farming. She inspired the students to start vermicomposting alongside their studies as most of the students belong to agricultural background and hence can avail this opportunity. She also discussed future endeavours with the Department. The whole training was coordinated by Prof. Neeru Sharma, HOD, Department of Environmental Sciences and Convenor Eco Club. The faculty members who were present on the occasion were Prof. Kawaljeet Kour, Prof. Bindu Sharma, Dr. Poonam Kamotra, Dr. Anupma Arora, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Sharma, Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma. Dr. Punam Rani, HOD History, presented the formal vote of thanks.
Dr. Vishal Mahajan elaborated the students about organic farming, pupose of vermicomposting and advantages of vermicompost through a very interesting PPT presentation. He also The Department donated a Vermibed of 3600 X 1200 X 600 dimension to the college for establishing a vermibed in the coming days of the trainingShe also apprised the students of other skill trainings, workshops and lectures organized by the college time to time under IIC for making the students skilled.
