| Watershed committees under CAD felicitated | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATHUA, MARCH 24 (INFO)- A one day felicitation function under National Watershed Development Programme Rainfed Areas programme to honour the watershed committees of on going watershed development projects in command area was organized Dayalachak in Hiranagar tehsil at Kathua district today.
Director command Area development, Jammu inaugurated the programme.
District Agriculture Officer, command area development subject matter specialists, agriculture extension officers, Field functionaries and watershed committee members of three micro-watershed development project along with landless families were present.
To exploit the productivity and income potential of this area, a new programme, i.e. "NWDPRA" National Water Shed development project for rainfed area was framed and guidelines were given by the ministry of Agriculture, during the year 2000 keeping in view the grim picture of poverty in rainfed regions due to water scarcity, rapid depletion of ground water table, fragile ecosystem, land degradation and so many other factors.
NWDPRA was implemented during 2004-05 in this Sub- Division. Forlain watershed of Barnoti Block, Gara Satoora watershed in Hitanagar Block & Bein-II watershed in Ghagwal Block were taken up for development through various NWDPRA project activities and by ending March 2009 these are achieving saturation.
The objective is to conserve natural resources through people participatory approach, achieve in-situ soil and water conservation, to achieve sustainable development through holistic watershed approach and to raise the socio-economic status of the local inhabitants.. |
