| Personality development, quality education should be only goal of schools: Omar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, MARCH 24 – Welcoming the growth of private schools in the State, Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah has said that the only objective of these institutions should be universalization of quality education and overall personality development of children.
The Chief Minister said this while speaking at the Annual Day function of G. D. Goenka Public School, about 15 km from here today.
Mr. Abdullah said that imparting quality education to young buds and nurturing them in a befitting manner should be the mission of schools as it will enable the students to take futuristic responsibilities as able and qualified citizens. “In no way schools should be established for commercial purposes. Economic gain, political purpose or earning fame should not be the motive behind setting up of educational institutions”, he said, adding the same will jeopardize the future of the students as well as the State.
Stressing on all-round development of children in schools, the Chief Minister said extra-curricular activities should go hand-in-hand with academic curricula. “While scientific and technical education is imperative in present-day global spectrum, the participation of students in games, athletics, cultural events and theatre is also equally important”, he said.
The Chief Minister said teachers have stupendous responsibility of motivating students to utilize their spare time in outdoor activities like playing, touring, reading and social activities. “It has been observed that children nowadays spend most of their time in watching television or playing video games. We have to modify this trend for the larger interests of students and human resources development”, Mr. Abdullah said.
Legislators, Mr. Ashok Khajuria, Mr. Reshpal Singh, Ch. Sukhanandan, former Ministers, Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma and Mr. Ajay Sadhotra and Deputy Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation were present at the function, besides large number of students, parents, teachers and residents of the areas.
Earlier, Chairman of the Institution, Mr. Hukam Chand Bansal, in his welcome address, thanked the Chief Minister for attending the function and encouraging the children. He also gave resume of the activities of the school and presented a memento to the Chief Minister.
Later, the students presented a variety programme and received applause from audience present on the occasion. |
