Jammu, Sept 15: Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu, under the leadership of Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, conducted a highly anticipated Angel Investor Masterclass in collaboration with JK Angel Network on September 14, 2024 at Jagti. The event, part of the Business Incubator under IIM Jammu (IIM Jammu FEISD), marked a pioneering effort to engage High Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs) in building an entrepreneurial ecosystem in Jammu & Kashmir by initiating the formation of an Angel Network. Over 30 HNIs participated in the masterclass, which provided invaluable insights to budding investors on venture investing.
The Chief Guest for the event was Shri Rahul Sahai, Chairperson of PHD-CCI, while Ms. Ruchika Gupta, Chairperson of FICCI-FLO, served as the Guest of Honour. Both dignitaries were accompanied by participants from their respective organizations, enhancing the prestige of the event.
The masterclass began with an introductory note by Dr. Vivek Sharma, Chief Innovation Officer at IIM Jammu, who highlighted IIM Jammu's efforts to promote entrepreneurship through various programs and Ideathons at the district level in J&K. He introduced the esteemed guests and speakers brought together by JK Angel Network for the masterclass and the role of IIM Jammu for stakeholder development.
Following this, Dr. Muqbil Burhan, Chairperson, Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Skill Development IIM Jammu, delivered the welcome address. He emphasized the significance of the masterclass in addressing the funding gap in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, stressing the vital role of venture capitalists and angel investors in supporting budding entrepreneurs. He also noted that IIM Jammu is one of the few institutes in India to introduce Entrepreneurship and Innovation as part of its curriculum.
In his address, Shri Rahul Sahai, a leading industrialist from the Jammu & Kashmir region, highlighted both the promises as well as challenges of investing in startups within J&K, due to its unique environment.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Suraj Malik, an expert in M&A, Family Office planning, and private equity transactions, provided an in-depth analysis of the Angel Investment Ecosystem in India, covering how to evaluate deal flow and manage risk mitigation. This was followed by a session with Mr. Saurabh Jain, an experienced investment banker, who discussed angel investing as a strategic investment option. Mr. Tushar Gandotra, the founding partner of JK Angel Network, shared the network's vision and outlined future plans to further the initiative.
Attendees of the masterclass gained valuable insights into the intricacies of the investment process, including navigating the complexities of due diligence. The discussions centered on encouraging potential investors to invest in the future of Indian startups in the Jammu & Kashmir region. A structured approach to syndicate investing was also explored, allowing investors to collectively analyze and invest in businesses for mutual benefit. There was also significant dialogue about the growing opportunities in technology and sustainable sectors, with a focus on public needs.
The workshop concluded with a detailed Q&A session, where some participants, already experienced Angel investors, inquired about JKAN’s plans to organize a syndicate of Angel investors in J&K. These interactions provided practical guidance and real-world perspectives, enriching the overall learning experience.
The event attracted a diverse audience of business owners and prospective investors from the region, all eager to explore new opportunities and expand their networks. Participants praised IIM Jammu's ongoing initiatives to bolster the entrepreneurial ecosystem in J&K through such programs, leaving with actionable strategies to contribute to the region's economic growth.
The entire program was orchestrated by Mr. Kanav Padha, whose efforts in bringing together the key players were invaluable. Dr. Vivek Sharma, CIO of IIM Jammu, delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the event on a positive note.
With events like this Angel Investor Masterclass, IIM Jammu continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of startups and investors in the region of Jammu & Kashmir.
