JAMMU, Sept 17: Department of Environmental Sciences of Government Degree College Vijaypur commemorated International Ozone Day with a series of enlightening activities and discussions. This year's theme, "Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action," aim is to not only celebrate the accomplishments but also look forward to deeper and faster action under the Montreal Protocol in the future.
The Seminar started with the welcome address by Poonam Kundan, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, who delivered an insightful keynote address. She highlighted the significant achievements of the Montreal Protocol, which has been instrumental in phasing out substances responsible for ozone depletion. She also discussed ongoing challenges and the need for sustained action to ensure the recovery of the ozone layer.
Students of the college actively participated in the one day Seminar with oral and poster presentations. Some of the students presented detailed research on the causes and consequences of ozone layer depletion. They discussed how human activities, such as the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances (ODS), have historically contributed to the thinning of the ozone layer. Some students also explained how increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation due to ozone layer thinning can lead to higher rates of skin cancer, eye damage, and disruptions in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Several students discussed international agreements like the Montreal Protocol, which have been crucial in reducing the use of harmful substances and promoting recovery of the ozone layer. They also emphasized local initiatives and the role of community awareness in supporting global goals.
