Renaming New York's Street great honour to Guru Ravidass: Balbir
9/17/2024 10:52:57 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 17: In a landmark event celebrated by the Ravidassia community and allies, a street in New York City has been officially renamed "Shri Guru Ravidass Marg." This momentous occasion, which took place outside the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple in Woodside, marks a proud achievement in honoring the legacy of a revered figure in the fight against caste discrimination and for universal brotherhood.
Balbir Ram Rattan, national general secretary of Shri Guru Ravidass Vishwa Mahapeeth, expressed his profound pride and joy in a statement: "This is not just a proud moment for the Ravidassia community but a historic milestone for everyone who believes in the values of equality and human dignity. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha of New York, the Begumpura Cultural Society, and all the respected community members who have made this possible."
The street renaming ceremony, which took place near the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple-a revered institution established in 1987-was a significant tribute to Guru Ravidass, a 14th-century saint and poet whose teachings championed equality and social justice.
Balbir Ram Rattan said that this street will serve as a permanent reminder of our shared humanity and the values that Guru Ravidass stood for. He said that Guru Ravidass's teachings emphasize that all human beings are equal, transcending distinctions of caste, color, or religion. His hymns, which are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, and his followers, including the renowned saint poetess Mirabai, reflect his profound impact on spiritual and social reform.
Balbir further noted, "Guru Ravidass's life and teachings continue to inspire and guide us. His message of universal equality and brotherhood is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. The renaming of this street is a testament to the enduring relevance of his legacy."
As the name "Shri Guru Ravidass Marg" is unveiled, it symbolizes not only the rich heritage of the Ravidassia community but also the broader values of inclusivity and respect that New York City strives to embody. This event serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the continuous journey toward a more just and equitable society.
