| 2-day Consultative Workshop on formulation of drug policy begins | | Drug policy on anvil: Kapur | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, MARCH 25 – Chief Secretary, S. S. Kapur has said the government has initiated a process for formulating the drug policy for the State to streamline the health sector. He said a policy has to be worked out which is not only rational but cost- effective, practicable and affordable to the people of the State. Kapur was addressing the inaugural session of two-day Consultative Workshop on formulation of drug policy at Indian Institute of Integrated Medicine, organized by J&K State Health Society here today. Experts of world-repute that include Dr. Krisantha Weerasuriya, Dr. H. Sudershan and Rakesh Kumar Rishi are among the guest invitees who are scheduled to present their viewpoints. Besides, representatives of medical fraternity of the State are participating in the workshop. The Chief Secretary said the health sector in the State has not been able to record remarkable performance and it is the endeavour of the government to put it back on track. He also emphasized adopting a qualitative drug policy which would take all the stakeholders including the government on board, he added. Kapur said it is the long standing demand of the people to have access to qualitative medicines and procurement of these drugs and added it is the right time to seek expert opinion on the issue acceptable to the government and the people. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner/Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Atal Dulloo welcomed the guest experts and other participants and said it is the dire need of the State to adopt a drug policy to ensure availability of quality medicines to the people. He gave a detailed power-point presentation over the current issues confronting the medical sector, and added there is a negligible private sector and the public sector is not in a position to cope with the requirements as all the public sector institutions lack infrastructural facilities. He also made mention of certain areas and priorities besides highlighting the issue of poor access of drugs to the people. Director Family Welfare, Dr. Kulbushan Pandotra, Principal, GMC, Jammu, Dr. Rajinder Singh, Principal, GMC, Srinagar Dr. Shahida Mir, Principal, Dental College, Jammu, Dr. M. R. Sharma, Director, Health Services, Srinagar, Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad, Director, Health Services, Jammu, Dr. Jasbir Singh, Controller, Drugs Organization, senior faculty members and other officers of Health and Medical Department were also present in the workshop. |
