| Weeklong World Theatre Day Celebrations begins at Natrang | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 25: Weeklong World Theatre Day celebrations inaugurated here today at Natrang Studio Theatre, Jammu by the Natrang Director Balwant Thakur with the lighting of the traditional lamp. Natrang is celebrating the World Theatre Day with full fanfare and gaiety to mark the success of Jammu theatre at National and International level. From 26th March a six day theatre festival will commence which will feature six popular productions of Sunday Theatre series.
On the inaugural day today three improvised performances were organized which were prepared by Natrang’s young actors through an exercise conducted by Balwant Thakur. Natrang in quest of new methods for actors training has developed a technique which puts the actors to a situation where they are bound to evolve a dramatic situation, script, its music, performance design, direction and ultimately a play performance. The performances produced in such kind of improvisation workshops are usually not meant for public performance. But Natrang to make it an unusual experience for its regular audience opened these experimental performances for public. For audience it was an amazing experience and the rarest opportunity to have an intimate sharing of the process of the evolution of a dramatic action. Theme of today’s exercise was ‘Something which is not in existence’. This challenging theme which was assigned right before the public generated lot of enthusiasm among the spectators, watching them hitting their heads in the process of the creation of something not in existence.
In most of the cities of Europe, theatre groups do provide such occasions quite often and there is growing demand from the people who are particularly interested to have a close look to the churning of a creative process.
Natrang director while elaborating on this new experiment said that they wanted to do something different and highly befitting to the opening day of the World Theatre Day celebrations. As such we keep performing new and old plays but this day desired to be showcased with something unusual and of extraordinary nature. The overwhelming response has prompted us to repeat this kind of interactive presentations after regular intervals. This kind of creative work offers equal opportunity both to the performers and the spectators to have the aesthetic journey of an innovative creation. |
