Congress worries over BJP’s plan to encourage independents in Kashmir

Jammu, Sept 22: Amid reports that Jammu and Kashmir is going to witness a hung assembly after the elections, the Congress party on Monday sounded the alarm on what party leaders believe is a sinister plot by the BJP to manipulate the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir elections.
Out of 908 candidates contesting the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, over 40 percent are Independents.
Opposition parties allege that many of these Independents are backed by the BJP to split votes. This is the first assembly election since the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.
A total of 365 candidates are running as Independents, the second-highest number in the region’s history, following 2008’s 468 Independents.

According to Nasir Hussain, a Congress Working Committee member and Rajya Sabha MP, the BJP is secretly backing independent candidates and smaller parties to create confusion and instability after the election. This, Hussain claims, is a deliberate attempt to prevent the Congress-National Conference coalition from securing a decisive mandate.
He alleged by supporting independents and smaller parties BJP wants to create chaos and confusion. He further said that the BJP is hoping for a fractured mandate and an unstable government.
Hussain warned that the BJP's tactics will ultimately hinder development and prosperity in the region, emphasizing that only a stable government can guarantee progress. He urged voters to be vigilant and recognize the BJP's deceitful strategies.
