| Harshdev alleges conspiracy in recent revision of electoral rolls | | Urges EC to order inquiry | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 25- Alleging deep rooted conspiracy by the Government in recent revision of electoral rolls wherein a drastic reduction has been effected in the total number of voters of Jammu region and increase in Kashmir Valley, Harsh Dev Singh MLA and Chief Spokesperson of JKNPP has urged upon the Election Commission of India to hold an enquiry into the whole gamut of electoral registration in the state. He further called for punitive action against all those government functionaries responsible for arbitrary deletions of names in electoral rolls and for wrongful refusals in effecting fresh registration of voters. He said that the voters of Jammu Region have been reduced drastically as compared to the figures of previous elections by effecting arbitrary deletions of names from voters’ lists and by refusing to entertain fresh applications, in large number of cases, for registration in the electoral rolls In a handout released to the press here today he regretted that lakhs of names were deleted from voters’ lists of Jammu Region unilaterally by the Government functionaries and Election Department officials at the behest of their political masters without giving opportunity to affected persons. He said that the move was a deliberate attempt on the part of the Government to weaken and to defeat the claims of Jammu Region for Delimitation and for a higher number of seats in the Assembly as well as Parliament. Harsh Dev Singh said that ‘Right to Vote’ was not only a constitutional guarantee but had also been expressly provided for and acknowledged in Section 72 of the Representation of People Act. He regretted that the said right was violated by certain Government functionaries and Election Department officials by unscrupulous and reckless deletions of voters names from the voters list and by disallowing fresh applications for registrations. He said that representations had been made by people from different tehsils of Jammu Region protesting against arbitrary method of electoral revision. He said demonstrations were also held recently in Majalta and Udhampur where people stated that their applications for voter registration had been wrongfully rejected thereby depriving them of their right to vote in any part of the state. Expressing grave concern over the reduction in the number of voters of Jammu Region despite increase in population and migration from Valley,
