Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 26: In a dual event to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, the Department of English at Government College for Women, Gandhinagar, Jammu, hosted a seminar on "Gandhi's Vision for a Sustainable Future" and an essay writing competition on the theme "Relevance of Gandhi's Principles in Today's World." Both events highlighted the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings in addressing contemporary issues such as sustainability, social justice, and environmental conservation.
The events were held under the patronage of college Principal Dr. S.P. Saraswat, who emphasized the importance of adopting Gandhian principles for a sustainable future. Prof. Archana Bakshi, Head of the Department of English, reflected on Gandhi's advocacy for self-reliance and sustainable practices, noting how his ideals continue to inspire environmental movements.
In the seminar, students from various streams presented their views on how Gandhi's vision of balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship can address modern sustainability crises. Topics such as eco-friendly living, reducing consumerism, and applying Gandhian principles to environmental challenges were discussed.
Alongside the seminar, an essay writing competition was organized to explore the ongoing relevance of Gandhi's principles of truth, non-violence, and simplicity in addressing modern societal challenges such as inequality and environmental issues. The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across academic streams.
Faculty members Dr. Naresh Sharma, Dr. Jyoti Dutt, Dr. Shakun Mahajan, Dr. Chetna Mahajan, Dr. Kiran Kalra, Dr. Rippy Bawa, and Dr. Suman Bala were actively involved in organizing the event. Dr. Rippy Bawa welcomed the audience. Pratishtha from Semester V managed the proceedings, and Dr. Chetna Mahajan delivered the vote of thanks.
The essays provided thoughtful reflections on how Gandhi's principles remain relevant to modern issues, such as inequality and social justice. The event concluded with an award ceremony, where Gurleen Kour secured first place, followed by Kamakshi Manhas in second and Meenakshi in third in the essay writing competition. Winners of seminar included Aakrida Mahajan at the first place followed by Samiksha Narang in second place and Alishba Khalid in the third. The judging panel included Dr. Jyoti Dutt, Prof Anupama Sharma, Dr. Poonam Rajput, and Dr. Kiran Kalra.
