Kargil highway to open from April 7
3/26/2009 11:44:56 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU: The Srinagar-Kargil Highway, closed since December last owing to heavy snowfall in the region, is expected to be thrown open to traffic
from April 7.

"With snow clearance operations being undertaken around Zojila pass, the Srinagar-Kargil road is expected to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by April 7, 2009," Deputy Commissioner (Kargil) Satish Nehru said.

The highway was closed for vehicular traffic in December last year due to heavy snowfall at Zojila pass. As a result, road connectivity between the entire Ladakh region and the rest of the state was cut-off.

To restore traffic on the highway, Himank wing of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started snow clearance work from both the ends of the Zojila pass, Nehru said.

So far, snow has been cleared from 30-km long stretch and work on the remaining 9-km is expected to be completed by the first week of April, he said.
