| Mufti tipped to be PDP candidate in Anantnag | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR: People's Democratic Party patron and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Muhammed Sayeed is likely to contest the Lok Sabha polls from the PDP stronghold of Anantang in south Kashmir. Though no official announcement has been made, sources said many in the party wanted the former Union home minister to "shift to the national politics for the time being". "If he decides to go to New Delhi , Mufti Sahab may have a significant role there in the emerging fluid national political scene " said MLA and PDP general secretary Nizam-ud-din Bhat. At present, Mufti Sayeed is the MLA from the Ananatnag constituency. His daughter Mehbooba Mufti , elected again from the south Kashmir segment of Wachi, is the leader of the PDP legislative party. PDP feels that Anantnag will be a "walk-over " seat for Mufti Sayeed. In the recent Assembly polls , PDP candidates won 12 of the 16 Assembly segments in south Kashmir, an advantage of two seats over the party’s tally here in 2002. In 1998, Mufti had contested the Lok Sabha election as Congress candidate, first time successfully in his 40-year-long political career in J&K.
PDP, which has decided to field candidates in all the Lok Sabha seats in J & K, is planning to field former state Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Qarra in the prestigious Srinagar constituency. Former Minister of Tourism, Mohammad Dilawar Mir, is the likely nominee in the north Kashmir seat of Baramulla while Kachu Feroz is the probable candidate for the Ladakh seat. In Jammu region , PDP is likely to field former Rajya Sabha MP Trilok Singh Bajwa in Jammu-Poonch seat and Baldev Singh in the Udhampur-Doda constituency , sources indicated. However, an influential section of the party leadership is said to be insisting on fielding a Muslim candidate in view of the fact that PDP had, for the first time, bagged two seats of Mendhar and Darhal in the Muslim-dominated Poonch-Rajouri belt and stood runner up on two more seats. |
