4 militants killed in Valley gunbattles

SRINAGAR, Mar 26: With the mopping up operation still underway in Shamasbari area in Kupwara district, where 17 militants and 8 soldiers have died so far in a week-long gunbattle, Police and security forces today claimed to have eliminated four more militants in different encounters in Kashmir valley.
Officials sources told Early Times that acting on a specific information, troops laid an ambush in Izmarg, close to LoC near Kanzal, in the afternoon today. During the operation, one group of militants was noticed making infiltration into Gurez sector. As troops challenged the infiltrators, they opened fire and dispersed in different directions. One of the fleeing militants got killed and search was in progress for his associates who were not yet believed to have crossed back to the PoK side.



Sources said that troops of RR 28 Bn, 9 Para and Police killed one armed militant in an encounter in Droosu-Potshai belt of Sogam in Lolab valley of Kupwara district this evening. The militant killed in the operation was unidentified but officials believed him to be a Lashkar-e-Toiba cadre from PoK. Reports said that firing was still going on when reports last came in from Sogam tonight.
Troops of RR 6 Bn killed yet another militant in an encounter at Hachmarg in Hafruda area of Handwara Police district today. Sources said that he too was unidentified but believed to be a member of the same group which had been possibly completely wiped out by Army in a 6-day-long operation in Kupwara district. Sources said that troops swooped on the house of Alamuddin Khatana immediately after receiving tip off regarding the militant’s hiding. With this, as many as 18 militants are claimed to have been killed by security forces in Kupwara-Handwara belt in the last one week.
Sources said that troops of RR 14 Bn eliminated a top-wanted “District Commander” of Jaish-e-Mohammad, namely Waseem Bilal, in an overnight operation at Dardpora Arin in Bandipore area. One AK rifles, 3 grenades and 5 SIM cards of mobile phones are claimed to have been recovered from his possession.
Meanwhile, official sources said that a bomb disposal squad today neutralized an IED that had been laid in a container and planted on Srinagar-Gulmarg Road near Mechanical Engineering Department at Tangmarg.
