Jammu, Oct 4: The Students of The Law School recently had a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience of prison administration and issues surrounding crime, punishment and rehabilitation during a visit to District Jail Ambphalla, Jammu. The contingent, comprising eighty-two eager participants, was accompanied by faculty members Dr. Monica Narang (Coordinator), Dr. Renu Jamwal, Dr. Upasana Sharma, and Dr. Vandita Sharma.
This visit aimed to provide budding lawyers with an authentic understanding of the criminal justice system. The students engaged enthusiastically with both prison officials and inmates for over five hours. Two liaison officers offered valuable insights into the history and significant aspects of prison administration, guiding the students through various facilities, including prison cells, the kitchen, bakery, and more.
A particularly impactful moment was when students visited the gallows, a poignant reminder of the gravity of capital punishment. The visit highlighted the prison’s role not just as a place of confinement, but as an institution focused on reformation.
The Prison Administrative Authorities have implemented vocational training programs, offering skills in carpentry, tailoring, book-binding, candle making, and embroidery. Students were also impressed by the artwork created by inmates, which reflected their concerns about the environment and local heritage.
Additionally, the group explored the prison hospital and counselling center, observing the healthcare facilities available to inmates.
The prison houses a legal aid clinic that provides free legal assistance to deserving cases. The students assured the authorities of their commitment to contribute to this initiative.
This visit proved to be an invaluable educational experience, igniting the spirits of our students as they recognized the challenges faced by both officers and inmates. A memorable aspect of the day was a recreational program conducted by under trial prisoners, showcasing the prison’s rehabilitative approach.
The entire visit was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Seema Rohmetra, Director, The Law School, with support from Superintendent Mr. Harish Kotwal and the dedicated staff of the jail. This initiative not only enriched the students’ understanding but also reinforced the importance of compassion and reform in the justice system. |
