| Break barriers of prejudice; treat disabled persons with dignity: Usha Vohra | | Workshop on ‘Summit of Minds’ on UNCRPD at MIER | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 27- A 2-day Workshop on summit of minds on UN Conventions for rights of persons with disabilities was inaugurated at the MIER College of Education by Usha Vohra, the First Lady of the State here today. This Workshop has been sponsored by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) through its Zonal Coordination Committee (North Zone). Sara Johnson, Chairperson, Zonal Coordination Committee, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Other prominent personalities present on the occasion were Dr. Arun K. Gupta, Dr. Renu Gupta, Prof. Abdul Aziz, Dr. Adit Gupta, Dr. Rajni Dhingra, Prof.and Head, Department of Home Science, Dr. S. Sapru, Registrar MIER, Dr. D.R. Kapoor, Dr. Sunita Zalpuri, Associate Professor, IMPA, Mrs. Santosh Magotra, noted social activist, Ashwini Jojra, President Sahyog. In her keynote address, Usha Vohra dwelt at length on the causes, types and manifestations of disability. She gave statistics on the different kinds of disability and highlighted the need to take practical measures for their multifaceted development in education and empowerment. She enlightened the audience with the provisions of the Acts under the Indian Constitution. She gave a clarion call to do away with prejudices, biases and discriminative practices so that the society can support, encourage and treat the disabled people with dignity. Unless these barriers are broken and early detection/preventive measures are provided services for the disabled will remain lopsided. She complimented the efforts of MIER to take initiative in this direction. Mementoes were presented to the First Lady, Vohra and Sara Johnson on behalf of the Institute. Earlier, in his welcome address Chairman MIER, Dr. Arun K Gupta said that MIER has emerged as a leading institution in the J&K State where efforts are made to train specialists for handling persons suffering from disabilities. He hoped that the Workshop would lead to the constructive sharing of ideas to overcome barriers and frustrations of the disabled so as to reach the summit together. Dr. Renu Gupta, Director MIER, in her introductory remarks threw light on the scenario of the disability in the perspective of violence, injury, neglect or negligent treatment, ignorance and exploitation and highlighted the Pre-amble of the UN Convention laying emphasis on equality between genders, age, castes and creeds across socio-economic barriers to ensure human rights and fundamental freedom for the persons with multiple disabilities. Sara Johnson highlighted the activities and contributions of the RCI in championing the cause of the disabled in India. She threw light on the multi-pronged and integrated efforts made by the RCI through its different schemes so as to enable and empower the disabled to lead a productive and dignified life in society. She complimented the MIER for taking initiatives in this direction assuring of assistance to the institute to further its efforts for the empowerment of the disabled. |
