World Habitat Day Celebrated

Jammu, Oct 7: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre, commemorated World Habitat Day with a seminar held at Channi Himmat, Jammu. The event was graced by Dr. Devansh Yadav, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Jammu and Chief Executive Officer of Jammu Smart City Limited, who served as the Chief Guest. The event was chaired by Prof. Dr. Bhawna Sharma, FIE, Chairman of IEI Jammu Local Centre, and Sachin Tickoo, Honorary Secretary, alongside a large gathering of engineers, professionals, and members of the civil society. The theme for this year’s celebration was "Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future." During her welcome address, Dr. Bhawna Sharma emphasized the pivotal role that young people can play in shaping sustainable, inclusive, and resilient cities. She highlighted how urbanization has posed challenges globally, including overcrowding, environmental degradation, housing shortages, and social inequality. According to her, the innovative thinking and fresh perspectives of the youth are critical in addressing these urban challenges and leading transformative changes. A total of four technical papers were presented during the seminar, delivered by prominent engineers, including Er. P. K. Nanda, FIE, Er. B. L. Rawal, FIE, Er. Sumil Goyal, MIE, and Er. Joy Ganjoo, AM Technologist. These papers delved into various aspects of urban sustainability and the role of youth in creating better urban futures. In his keynote address, Chief Guest Dr. Devansh Yadav called upon all stakeholders to work in unison to create a carbon-free J&K and emphasized the importance of developing green zones in Jammu City as part of the Smart City Mission.
