Today marks a historic day for Jammu and Kashmir as the results of the first Assembly elections post the abrogation of Article 370 are announced. This election, which commenced in August and concluded peacefully, is a testament to the triumph of democracy in a region that has long been marred by Pakistan sponsored terrorism and separatism.
For the first time in decades, the people of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an election free from the shadow of terrorism, fear, and boycott calls. The massive participation in these elections signifies not just a political victory, but a deeper, more profound social transformation in the region.
The peaceful conduct of the three-phase polls is a powerful indicator that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has changed for the better.
The government’s firm stance on rooting out terrorism and separatism has finally borne fruit, as evidenced by the complete absence of violence during the election process. Not a single incident of terror or unrest was reported during the elections—a far cry from the situation in the past when elections were often marred by violence, intimidation, and widespread boycotts.
The most remarkable aspect of this election was the enthusiastic participation of the people. Voter turnout across all three phases was overwhelming, with citizens from every corner of Jammu and Kashmir—be it the remote villages of the Kashmir Valley or the bustling urban centers of Jammu—coming out in large numbers to cast their vote. This high voter turnout is a powerful statement by the people, reaffirming their faith in democracy and the electoral process. It signals their desire to be part of the national mainstream and their determination to elect representatives who will work for peace, development, and prosperity.
What makes this election particularly significant is the absence of boycott calls, which were once a hallmark of the separatist groups in the Valley. In previous elections, calls for election boycotts often led to low voter turnouts and further alienation of the people from the political process. However, the dismantling of the separatist ecosystem, coupled with the decline of terror networks, has created a conducive environment for democratic engagement. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are no longer held hostage by the rhetoric of secessionism and militancy; they have embraced their democratic rights with newfound confidence.
The results of these elections are more than just numbers; they reflect a victory of hope over fear, of unity over division. They are an affirmation of the collective will of the people to move forward, leaving behind the scars of conflict and embracing the promise of development. The elected representatives now have a tremendous responsibility to channel this optimism into action. The mandate is clear: people want peace, stability, and growth.
