Early Times Report
HIRANAGAR, Oct 14: In a noteworthy academic and cultural initiative, GLDM Government Degree College (GDC), Hiranagar, has successfully concluded a 15-day Investigative Research Skills Workshop focused on "Cultural Resource Mapping of Hiranagar Block," in partnership with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Jammu Chapter.
This workshop was designed to equip students and faculty with essential investigative research techniques, emphasizing the importance of mapping the rich cultural resources of the region. Participants received practical training in identifying and documenting local heritage, including historical monuments, traditions, and community practices. Such mapping is vital for the conservation of both tangible and intangible cultural assets, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and protect the diverse heritage of Hiranagar. The collaboration with INTACH underscored the significance of cultural preservation and active community involvement.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored a variety of topics that highlighted the cultural wealth of the Hiranagar Block. They learned advanced methodologies for locating and recording historical sites, delved into the architectural significance of local monuments such as forts and temples, and investigated the customs and traditions of nearby communities. Additionally, they focused on documenting unique artisanal traditions, including handicrafts and handloom heritage, while also considering ecological factors that contribute to the region's cultural landscape. Culinary heritage was another focal point, with discussions on local dishes linked to specific events or seasons.
Under the leadership of S.M. Sahni, Convener of INTACH Jammu Chapter, the workshop aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to document and preserve Hiranagar's rich cultural heritage. Dr. Pragya Khanna, Principal of GLDM GDC Hiranagar, played a pivotal role in the program's success, with a dedicated team of faculty members, including Prof. Bindu Sharma, Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof. Bhavna Jamwal, Prof. Vijay Kumar, and Prof. Ganga Sharma, ensuring the event ran smoothly.
A significant aspect of the workshop was the active involvement of 35 students, who undertook fieldwork in designated areas of Hiranagar. After conducting thorough research, they prepared detailed reports that underwent a rigorous review process. The finalized reports, highlighting key cultural resources, will be submitted to INTACH to inform future conservation initiatives.
